This page holds the 1860's era costumes. This period will
have Civil War costumes for both the South and
the North. Southern Belles, Riverboat Gamblers, Southern Gentlemen,
Confederate Officers, Northern Belles,
Union Generals. For "back west" costumes-
try here. Dresses of
this time could be made of rich velvets, silks,
wools, and cotton. The richer you were the fancier the dress. Hoops were
worn by all the wealthy and the
merchant wife's if they could afford it, especially for a ball. Choose
light weight fabrics for the south and
warmer heavier fabrics for the north. Frock coats were worn by the men.
It was considered "proper dress".
Use worn or tattered frock coats for a middle to lower class. Men's
military costumes consist of either the
North Union Blue or the Confederate grey uniform. For "Gone With The
Wind" costumes during
pre-war thru post war can be found on this page. Scarlet O'Hara- Light
weight dress with a large straw hat
is great for the picnic scenes. Try the dark green velvet for the
infamous "curtain dress". Rhett Butler- use
a Riverboat Gambler costume. But Rhett never wore a hat! Ashley-
Confederate Uniform. Melanie-
something simple most of the time. |
